REAL KNIFE, FAKE SURGERY
Fake surgeries - known as placebo-controlled surgical trials - are entering mainstream medical research. The NIH believes so strongly in the value of placebo surgeries that it has begun rejecting experiments from university researchers that do not employ them. Critics of these trials complain that they violate the first principle of medicine: do no harm. Surgery is never risk-free. "When you're dealing with desperate illness, people will consent to anything."
TOBACCO RESIDUES FOUND IN FETAL FLUIDS
There is sizeable evidence that maternal cigarette smoking around conception and during pregnancy is associated with increased risk of miscarriage and fetal growth restriction (FGR) resulting in low birth weight. This study measured and compared the distribution of cotinine (nicotine metabolite) in fetal fluids during the first half of pregnancy in passive and active smokers. The results provide direct proof that cotinine accumulates in the early fetal circulation and fluids in measurable concentrations. The fetus appears too susceptible to chronic toxic exposure from both the mother's active smoking and the secondhand smoke. Because cotinine accumulates in the fetal fluids as early as seven weeks, women should be advised to give up smoking from conception and avoid environmental tobacco smoke exposure.
NO CAUSE FOR ALARM OVER POLIO VACCINES
A monkey virus that contaminated polio vaccines given to millions of people from 1955 through early 1963 has been found in human tumors, but there is no definite proof that it actually caused the rare cancers, a leading researcher said. "There's no reason to be alarmed about the polio vaccines," said Janet Butel, head of molecular virology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Her research claims that hundreds of people were dying yearly from cancers stemming from polio vaccines contaminated with simian virus 40, or SV40. Butel calls the finding of SV40 in human tumors "very suspicious" and deserving further investigation. "Some reporters have wanted to make this link between the contaminated polio vaccine and cancer.
